The Universe Senzala Hi-Tech

Senzala Hi-tech is a brazilian collective that has a very different and curious origin. It was conceived by the taekwondo athlete Diogo Silva, gold medal in 2007 Pan-American Games, and the rapper Sombra, member of the traditional and famous brazilian rap group SNJ. The team also features the producer and musician Minari Groove Box (from SNJ), DJ Ajamu (from Racionais MCs, most popular rap group in Brazil), percussionist and cartoonist Junião, who has been working for brazilian and european newspaper and magazines, and percussionist Gustavo Da Lua (from Nação Zumbi, one of the most important groups to contemporary brazilian music).

Strongly influenced by music, visual arts and culture from Africa and from african-brazilians, Senzala Hi-Tech uses hip hop beats and rhythms like jongo, coco, maracatu and samba itself, that were developed by the former african people who arrived in Brazil centuries ago.

Senzala Hi-Tech also express ideas and the way its members see the contemporary art and music through the afrofuturism that defines the collective’s visual identity, close to its african-brazilian influences. Brazilians drums, hip hop beats and electronic interferences get together to express the multiethnic universe of the project.

This kaleidoscope of artistic references guide us in our purpose of singing our roots, assimilate and change our everyday lifes, fight for freedom of thinking and to our people, using the strength of music, social criticism, humor and technology to take our message as far as possible.

In the former Brazil, senzala was the slave’s quarter. Nowadays, it’s memories are symbols of resistence. Because in the past we learned that being together was the only way for us to be able to fight for our freedom, identity and justice. The fight goes on today through our music, our dreams, achievements and learning.
